East Coast Whale
I found myself on the East Coast visiting Long Island and like with San Jose I had to take some time to check out the local whales. For this trip I decided to go out with Long Island Whale and Seal Watching out of Freeport, NY. Settling into the captains quarters on their ship (Their VIP but very well worth it option) we headed out to see what we might find. As we pulled out there were a few birds in the harbor to spot but as we headed out we were pretty quickly in the wide open Atlantic so spotting various wildlife wasn’t on the menu for this trip, but as we chased out towards New Jersey passing by the New York City skyline in the distance we found ourselves upon a whale! Specifically we found ourselves with NYC0091 a Humpback Whale from the area. NYC0091 was cruising along feeding wherever the food was, we watched as they zigzagged through the bay area coming up for bit and going back down. While rhythmic this movement behavior made predicting where they would surface quite the guessing game. While we were on scene with NYC0091 they did perform two lunge feedings which was an awesome thing to see! NYC0091 was also kind enough to give off a few good flukes including one with the NYC skyline in the background! All in all a great trip out with a great company would happily go back out with them again next time I am in the area.
